Gimme, Gimme, I Need.

"Gimme, gimme, I neeeeeeed."
-Bob, Bill Murray's character, in "What About Bob"

I've spent a lot of time lately, writing about what I want, but I haven't spent much time thinking about all that I have.

This list is a struggle today, on a morning when I don't feel particularly passionate about much; however, I think that it is on the days that lack "zip" when I MOST need to stop, reflect, and appreciate. I'm grateful for the house, health, freedom, income . . . obviously. Here's some of the other stuff:

I'm grateful for: vegetarian sausage that tastes like the real stuff but doesn't have gristle; potatoes (have never met a potato, particularly a breakfast potato, that I haven't liked); a gym schedule that has become part of our routine; nice weather; a phone conversation with my mom, who is in Northern Ireland for a month, visiting my Granny; a proposition from my four year old to "snuggle;" my husband, who is starting the coursework to turn his Associate's Degree into a Bachelor's; my husband, who "gets" me; French manicures; fresh paint, Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking;" Kanye West's "Gold Digger" song; a plant, flourishing on the window sill; "The Real Housewives of O.C." on Bravo tonight; beer after "cheerleading;" my dad and his passion for Honda Goldwings; Jeff Barnosky's short fiction (Google search him--his stuff, particularly the "Wilford Brimley/diabetes testing supplies" story, is hysterical); my quick and nimble fingers flying over the keyboard :); good teeth (I imagine you inspecting me as a potential buyer might inspect a horse); Aleve; the protests that occurred around this country yesterday; a clean refrigerator; coupons; and Chipotle black bean tacos.

Any post that starts with a quote from "What About Bob?" has to be good! That's my second-favorite Bill Murray movie (after Groundhog Day).

That's a wonderful list of stuff to appreciate, Cate.

A,
I hope you're feeling better! I'd be grateful for that, too. If not, I'd be grateful for you getting some sleep and soup (can't let go of the healing powers of soup). xo, my friend!

A good list my friend; especially the good teeth. What I would do to have those ~ sigh. It's time to start breaking out the mani/pedi's as well. (=

I agree with good teeth, this coming from someone who has had 8 root canals....don't ask, I have soft teeth.
For god's sake my mom has had all hers removed, Dentures baby!
And indeed it is flip flop time, and there is nothing worse than big ugly yellow toenails! oooooggghh.
well said!

Great post Cate and a great idea.

I have been in the "I wanna live I wanna give" mode too but stopped that yesterday and started living and giving - well something at least. I'd like to count my blessings too... good hair? Good credit? A nice image tweaker?

And a good husband? Usually when he remembers. A nice wannabe boyfriend? No he just turned nice again.... too early. Hmmm maybe that's it for now, the rest is in the wannabe mode....

My favorite is veggie lazagna. LOVE it. Especially when it's got lots of spinach.

My book club was just talking about wanting to read The Year of Magical Thinking and I think we will later this year, though I don't know if I will be able to wait that long! Part of me is afraid to read it, that such a year might be contagious someday. I can't imagine living through what she did but so grateful she chose to share it. I loved reading through your list Cate. And I have been on the same wavelength when I finally had to say to myself, "Okay enough is enough. Time to focus on all that you are blessed with as whichever I choose to focus on is going to grow.Keep focusing on whats not working and hurting and its just going to become a mushroom cloud." It is really making a difference, though it can take some time to reach that place of course and how crucial it is to have self-compassion in that in-between time.

Stephanie,
Isn't it a great movie? He's such a mess! There's a part of Bob in all of us, I think!

Jennifer,
That's what my world comes down to--Mexican food and my man. Those are the things that are gonna get me through!

Acumamakiki,
I recently did my first pedicure of the season. I much prefer "getting" one than doing it myself, but short on $, gotta do what you gotta do!

Bec,
You crack me up! Big, ugly yellow toenails and my mind immediately visualizes exactly what you are talking about--I'll bet they would be a real bitch to cut! My son has soft teeth, too. I feel for you!

Ann Marie,
I love your list! And I love your hair. I would give anything for gorgeous long tresses! Maybe I should try extensions? :)

Tanya,
Healthy AND delicious! You're making me hungry!

Antonia,
Agreed. I felt a bit puffed up making this list, recognizing all of the good things I have to be thankful for!

Alexandra,
You've had a lot of life changes lately (and traumatic stuff, too!). I think I would be much too overwhelmed to even get through my days, let alone acknowledge the things that I was thankful for. Yet, doing just that can be healing, can't it? Ohh, I hope you read Didion's book soon. It is quietly heartbreaking--she has an incredible gift!

Pearl,
Thank you, Pearl. And thank you for mentioning "Blogging for Books." I'll have to check that out!

Joely Sue,
I have Chipotle at least once a week. I can't even imagine how I survived without it! I hope your town gets a Chipotle sometime--or, if not, you have a really good Mexican restaurant!

Lynn,
He.Is.The.Best. Seriously, I've never really though of myself as a "fan," but in this case, I would buy a tee-shirt with the man's name all over it. He's THAT damn good!

Rita,
I could say the same for your site! I've missed you. I hope you are doing well and busy writing! xo
