Blind Love (or I Love Blinds)

When I was growing up, we had curtains: long drapes in the living room, ruffly ones in the kitchen. I didn't love them, but sometimes, if the mood struck, I hid behind the longer ones and wrapped their material around me like a ball gown (I also stood over furnace vents while wearing my nightgown and watched it--the nightgown--billow up, and pretended that I was pregnant).

As I grew older, my tastes evolved. My grandmother in Northern Ireland had venetian blinds, and when I visited her the Summer that I was twelve, I was consumed with the adjustment of them--open the slats fully, close them just a bit, tug the cord and elevate them, let it loose and watch them crash down. The woman practically had to rip me away from the damn windows, as occupied as I was with playing with them (that was also the Summer of Jane Eyre and sliding down banisters and pounding out the song, "The Entertainer" from the movie "The Sting," on the piano).

Soon after my first taste of "European window treatments," I visited my Summer friend, Stacy, in Ohio. She had no interest in her mother's interior decoration hobby, but I most certainly did. The Missus and I sat at the kitchen table, poring over material swatches and paint samples. There were shutters in their house. In keeping with precedent, I adjusted them, too (although I was starting to understand that this window treatment love was a bit weird, so I snuck the adjustments).

When Lou and I bought our house, we threw up a bunch of cheapy venetian blinds on most of the windows. One ambitious afternoon, Lou installed shutters in one of the three kitchen windows, but "window treatment love" was starting to become a painful affair; with home ownership, we realized that a lot of window treatments--especially ones for non-standard windows--are expensive. The other two kitchen windows, consequently, were never "clothed." Scrimping and saving, we finally put a roman shade in our front room (along with a matching shade on the door). Neither can be cleaned. This bothers me . . . what with four animals . . . but I roller them occasionally and still think that they're pretty (the shades, not the animals . . . well, the animals, too).

We recently painted our bedroom. And we're tired of the solo shutter in the kitchen. So, it is with much excitement that I prepare to invest in new blinds for these rooms; my tastes have remained varied, which is a good thing. Current infatuation is with natural wood shades, with names that are like poetry: fiji, lotus reeds, grasses osaka. I spent hours online last night, clicking and scrutinizing and searching for iridescent, scarlet, window scarves. And for the kitchen, I'm stalled in the eighties: huge floral prints and ballooned-out fabric.

Apparently, that window treatment love never fades. And I still love a good door, a door knob, interior and exterior shutters, and gates--just as much as I love a good purse.

I have my accessories. The house has hers.

Window coverings are my most difficult struggle in decorating. R had just mini-blinds, white, metal, boring, up when I moved in. We've been ever so gradually and tentatively hanging curtains over them in an attempt to warm and soften this contemporary beast of a house. Window scarves do seem more like accessorizing a cute outfit. I'm drawn to them too. This is a good piece of writing Cate, you've pulled in a whole life and shared your delight with us. Thank you.

That's a delightful jaunt along window treatments. I remember using a shower curtain as a gown too. I keep coveting some curtains for my study that may one day get painted "my" color, once I decide what color that might be. Love your closing thought.

I think the pharse, window treatment, is so interesting. It's always seemed funny to me, this general label than curtain, blind, shutter...

I love the idea of window treatments being the house's version of shoes or purses or earrings!

I hope you'll share some photos when you're done.

Yes, but does the house have a say in choosing HER accessories?
Houses are another great extension of ourselves aren't they. As shoes and bags say something about a person, so does the way they choose to have venetians or huge Roman-style drapes using vast amounts of material.
I'm a wooden venetian girl, but may allow the odd white linen curtain in.

Sorry to hear about your rejection crap! If only the publishing world was run by bloggers.:)

Oh, can i relate to this post! A love/hate relationship for me. I've lived in this house for over 5 yrs. and altho the upstairs have covering. I never got around to the downstairs because of the prohibitive cost and my own indecision. My new sunroom has nothing on its' 7 windows cause i keep changing my mind. My entire 1st floor of 16 windows and only one has one; but that is my window seat and i love, love, love my roman shade and 'spensive custom made cushion and pillows. It cost so much i had to stop here for awhile. sorry for being so long winded.

My mother loves window treatments too.. but I'm so jealous that she can sew and create her own.. I guess I'm at the mercy of purchasing. But I do think window treatments are like the icing on the cake.. I love them too. I like the wooden ones because you can dust them, but I love really pretty fabric ones.

'I have my accessories. The house has hers.' Ha, I love that! And so true, so true... and, let me tell you, I have been in such an accessorizing mood lately!

It feels good to give the house a new look once in awhile, doesn't it? I love the way window treatments affect the light in a room...but I'll admit, I spend more time dreaming about it than I do actually spending money on them. Lately I have a facination with fabric. I look foward to soon living in a city where I can actually find some good stuff!

Happy accessorizing!!! :)- heehee!

wow, this makes me feel guilty for just throwing up the first curtains we found (for our living room). but truly... windows are so important that giving "her" a scarf, skirt, or wooden lingerie only seems appropriate. it is the the shopping/looking for home decor that sucks all my energy. i am starting to really understand why people hire interior designers... but for now that's me. i don't get paid for it, so i take my time =)

btw. i have to look up half these terms because i dont know what they look like. i really need to become home inspired - you are so way ahead of me!

Ha! I loved reading this. Yes a girl and a house can not have too many accesories...or maybe they can. I don't know. With your passion for window treatments you should be a whiz at decorating your house. I think you secretly do and just pretend you don't. Now lets see pics of this new bedroom!!! pleeeeeeze!
You know how much I love stuff like this.

I've got no eye for decorating at all. My daughter, who's 13, helps me. She's got a great eye, and picked the window treatment for my living room sliders. Thank goodness for kids!

I can't wait to see the photographs of what you eventually put up! In my little flat, we have very very few (and small) windows - no window dressings for me - but I look forward to the day when I move into a place where I can pick the curtains. (Maybe I'll come to you for those iridescent scarlet ones - they sound intriguing!!)

I'm not sure I even know what window treatments are as much as I do love love and love home decorating! I'm glad you are at a place where you can do more of what you want with your house. As a new homeowner myself, I have LOTS of ideas of things I'd like to do but no homeowner fairy dishing out the cash to so right now! Do you know where one buys a little house fairy who keeps a bundle of cash under her hat at all times? I need one of those asap!

We've been in our house three years yet window treatments are scarce. I love watching home improvement shows for ideas but getting rooms finished is a constant struggle with my schedule. Thanks for your post, Cate.

Deirdre,
As much as I love a window treatment, I struggle with them, too! Things look much better in stores and in advertisements than they do in my own home! And the expense!

I'd never heard of window scarves until I visited Target last week. Some of the fabrics were gorgeous (and reasonably priced!). Doesn't the name just sound cute?

Thanks for the comment!

Tara,
Huge glass doors---I'm dying with jealousy! As much as I love window treatments, I think it's really the doors and windows themselves that I love, esp. huge ones! I can imagine how gorgeous your home is! And I'll definitely post pictures! Thank you!

ECM,
I know! It's so cold sounding. I generally prefer specific labels over blanket terms. Makes the item seem so much more tangible. I appreciate your comment!

Deb,
Thanks! I will definitely share pictures when I'm finished (but first, must find solutions that don't break our meager bank!).

Madeleine,
Thanks for your kind words! Yes, the house, unfortunately, does not get any input re: her accessories. She must trust me, which is not generally a good thing! I feel like a mom trying to give input to a teenage daughter about current fashion. At least, in my situation, there's no backtalk!

RDL,
That's it. I'm coming over. I want to hang out on that window seat and in your sunroom! Oh, I'll bet they're gorgeous! And yes, the cost is a definite drawback. I feel that if I commit to a window treatment, I've got to keep it forever (for the expense alone!). It's a lonnnnng process to dress a house! Thank you for your comment!

Holli,
Your comment made me laugh because a couple of weeks ago, Lou suggested that perhaps, I'd like to make my own curtains, and I just stared at him like, "Do you even KNOW me?" My sewing experience is limited to sewing DOLLHOUSE curtains/blankets! I'm jealous of your mom--what a fabulous (and money saving!) talent! xo

Melanie,
Accessorizing yourself or your house? Either way, I want pictures/details!

Jessie,
Thanks! And once you move, I want to hear all about your fabulous fabric finds!

Jojo,
You know that I love that term, "wooden lingerie!" And I've gotta say, tossing up some curtains that catch your eye can be a good thing. I think I build the whole window decorating endeavor up so much that I'm never satisfied (and I'm paralyzed with indecision!). Thanks for your comment!

Andrea,
I just saw more pictures of your gorgeous house on Flickr today, and I want to be you. I'm not kidding. Between the yard sale finds, the awesome paint colors, the amazing art work, and the furniture, you impress the hell out of me. I'll post pictures as soon as I'm done!

Shannon,
You're lucky to have her! We've got to surround ourselves with people who can help us make the best decisions! My four year old tries to help me pick out clothes and purses when I'm shopping--he cracks me up because he, like so many other little people, is drawn to sparkly, glittery things! I hope that his tastes evolve as he grows up (so he can help me like your daughter helps you!). Thank you for your lovely words!

Megg,
I was so excited to have a house because I was all about decorating, and then, we moved here, and I haven't done much (clarify: it's been a lonnnnnng process). I can't wait until you are able to put your stamp on a place--it will be beautiful--and I expect pictures, too!

P.S. I'm glad that you're back, safe and sound, and had a great trip! I've been devouring your posts but negligent about commenting lately. Hopefully, today . . .

Alexandra,
If you and the fairy ever meet up, send her my way . . . hard times, I'm tellin' ya! Thanks for making me smile!

January,
HGTV is one of my favorite channels. I watch, I get ideas, I am unable to implement. If it's not lack of money, it's lack of time! We TiVoed a bunch of House Hunters episodes recently, and every time we watch one, my eyes start darting around our house, looking for things that need changing. Then, I think that we should just move (yeah, right) so that we can start fresh.

Thanks for your comment!
