A Little This, A Little That, A Little Snow
We are anticipating our first snow of the season. Our first official snow. Our first snow accumulation. First snow angels, snowballs, and snowmen. I know this because I have been studying the NOAA website with an intensity that could rival that of a fledgling meteorologist trying to make it at the local affiliate. I am constructing charts and predictions. I don't care if we only get a dusting--my boys will each be bundled up in hats, mittens, four pairs of sweatpants, two tee-shirts, six pairs of socks, and a jacket, and sent outside to play. That's the tradition. That's what you get when you have a mother who spent the majority of her childhood either waiting for the school bus during a blizzard, or tunneling out seven foot high, snowplow-created snowdrifts during recess. I swear to God, snowpants were the required uniform at my elementary school. I have built more functional igloos than I care to remember.
The other tradition? Family walk to local Mexican restaurant for chips, tortilla soup, and quesadillas (which, on occasion, I have intentionally pronounced as "kaysa-dill-ahs," in a nod to Napoleon Dynamite's grandma and to be sort of funny; people--like my dad--have actually corrected me on this, as if I didn't know better).
No writing lately, though my finger click clacked their way across this very keyboard earlier tonight, skewering premium rooms and rates for our family vacation in March. We are going to Baltimore, which is only a forty-five minute drive from our house, but we will be staying overnight and having breakfast with a shark, and watching dolphins leap and cavort and flit across a pool, so we are very excited.
I'm reading "Get Happy" by Gerald Clarke. He wrote "Capote," which I loved. "Get Happy" is the biography of Judy Garland, and I'm liking it a lot. Amazon order arrived on Friday . . . I am knee deep in an accumulation of books . . . now, all I need is the snow!

I am hesitant to admit this, but I am excited about this snowfall as well. This is the first time in my life where I have not seen snow all winter.
I'm also looking forward to LaPaz and some Quesa-dill-as. :)
I want to come for some "dilla's" too.
I'll keep all parts crossed you get your snow!! It's my favorite season because of snow. It's a white on white decor done by nature.
:)
a.
I love the dillas!
Hope you get your anticipated snow.
Portland only gets real snow every few years and we had a surprise snowfall last week- it truly was magical AND I didn't have work for two days which was also wonderful! I hope you get some snow by the time you read this. And breakfast with a shark? I like it!
HEY!!! I am sorry to be a lot far behind the times here but, YAY!! You're BACK!!! Oh, I am so so glad to have your words in my life again!!
Breakfast with a shark?? wow.
Yay! You're back and a big YAY for snow! Like Alexandra said, we had some here in the Portland area last week and there's just nothing more fun than a snow day! Hope it was all that you hoped for!
Well I WAS excited about more snow. Now I know why your mom felt that way!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - it's 3AM and I think tortilla soup sounds fascinating. I think I'm going downstairs for guacamole. Was I supposed to be starting the early bird thing this week??
I heart tortilla soup and also, anticipating fun vacations! There's also roller derby in Baltimore (charm city roller girls) but that's probably not very family-oriented. (=
I want snow here too, sigh.
Lou,
Had fun with you, baby, but please, please do not shovel snow at midnight ever again. xo
Oh, a., beautiful philosophy! I will never look at snow the same way again. Wish you lived close so we could share the 'dilla love. xo
Stephanie, I can make a really delicious 'dilla with roasted poblanos. Of course, it has to be the most fattening thing created, but it's scrumptious. I don't think I've met a quesadilla that I haven't liked. xo
Pearl, thanks! Hope your winter has been relatively mild but you've been able to enjoy some snow. xo
Alexandra, I am soooo glad that you had two snowdays! That is such a gift. We got the snow, but it was low-key. I'm getting greedy, now. I'd like a nice small-scale blizzard on a Wednesday night. Not to be demanding or anything! xo
Megg, thanks! The shark is actually a human in a costume. I thought I'd leave an ambiguous description of it, however. A real shark seems to be a bit more exciting! xo
Kim, I agree! Nothing as much fun as a snow day. I hope you and your family enjoyed your time off! xo
Holli,
I've gotta learn to make tortilla soup. It's wonderful! We didn't have any guacamole at the restaurant, but now, you've got me craving some. And early bird eating is for EVERY week! xo
Kiki,
I think my boys would get a kick out of the roller derby. I'm going to google it. Thanks! I hope you get some snow. We need a nice little Nor'easter, don't you agree? xo
Hi Cate,
As I may have mentioned, I'm enjoying reading past posts, since you are not able to post new right now due to other obligations I understand. (Wish I could use bleeping snow in March as an excuse. I'm hoping it will pass us by later today. I'd like to "skate" in other ways than on the highway.)
That Judy Garland book is one I have on my wish list to check out from the library. I also want to read Capote. Years ago I read _________ by Capote. (The title just slipped my mind. This nightowl is up too early!)
My kids and I love the Baltimore Aquarium. mmmmmm! Sounds like it was a fun excursion in the winter.
