My First and Last Political Rant
Hmmm.
Oprah singlehandedly made James Frey accountable for putting his own spin on his own experiences, but no one has ever made "W" accountable for all of the lies that he told, the same "untruths" that have led to an ongoing situation that has ripped apart families, killed or injured thousands, and appears to be pretty damn unresolvable.
What kind of message are we sending here? Better be spot-on accurate in the entertainment industry, but we'll give you some leeway when it comes to international affairs.
I'm speechless.

Or as a bumber sticker I saw recently said: "Will someone please give that man a blow job so we can impeach him".
Speechless here too. Speechless and baffled.
Indeed!! excellent point, Cate.
I can't really understand why people are so enraged about a book that was originally marketed as a novel, but packaged as a memoir.
Oprah lost a few points with that one (at least in my book)
I have written so many times about the lack of transparency in Washington...and I can't believe, as you also can't, the focus on Oprah and this book story!
It really shows our values, not as individuals, but as a society.

Times like this make me glad I don't like politics. Makes life so much easier.
Hey Cate!
I missed that show everyone is talking and blogging about. W Bush -> Just making a wild prediction that he will be held accountable, but my vision is somewhat slanted, looking from Sovient Canuckistan... it seems that people are starting to speak up again, down South. But I understand that you do not wish to include politics in your writing policy. I did and got some incisive comments. So ignore this and have a great day. Nice to read your new entries!

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in my feelings (confusion?) about this.
Deb,
LOVE that bumper sticker! Have told the whole family about it, much to their absolute enjoyment.
Now tell us how you really feel? LOL!
Tanya
I think the only thing that bothers me about the James Frey thing (and I admit that I have not read the book, nor do I watch Oprah)is that i worry if people make too light of the situation...that the line becomes blurry between fiction and non-fiction. And I would hate to see the definition of literature redefined now.
xoxo
Very funny, Tanya! :)
Baylor,
Well said! I am a big believer in accountability, too--you take the action, you are deal with the consequences. I hadn't thought about the impact on literature, and I think you're right--as consumers, many of us are buying into the truthful part of NON-fiction!
Maybe it's that I'm not so much a fan of Oprah. I mean, I can be . . . but I didn't feel that that particular episode was one of her finer moments.
Thanks for your input here--you made me think!
I didn't see the Oprah show but I agree with you that we hold entertainers and writers to a higher standard than we do political leaders. I really can't believe we still have 2 more years with GW.
Michelle,
Did you watch the State of the Union address? Sweet Jesus, the number of times that man smirked--just so proud of himself!
Simply Coll,
I nearly missed you. Yep, I just couldn't stand the relentless humiliation of the man. I mean, call him out and be done with it. Patry Francis had a wonderfully written post about this on her blog. Thanks for commenting.
oh well..."ca-ching"! Yep it was ugly business all around... but you know his book sales doubled:))
Loved that bumper sticker!
